The History of Birthstones
Birthstones have been around since ancient times. Each month of the year has a particular gemstone linked with it. Experts believe that birthstones can be traced back to the Bible. In Exodus 28, Moses set forth directions for making special garments, specifically, the breastplate which was to contain twelve precious gemstones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Later, these twelve stones became associated with the twelve months of the calendar year.

In 1912, The National Association of Jewelers created the modern list of birthstones and they have not been altered to this day. While birthstones no longer have any religious significance, each birthstone has its own unique meaning:

January – Garnet – Protection
February – Amethyst – Wisdom
March – Aquamarine – Serenity
April – Diamond – Strength
May – Emerald – Hope
June – Pearl/Alexandrite – Love
July – Ruby – Vitality
August – Peridot – Beauty
September – Sapphire – Truth
October – Tourmaline – Healing
November – Citrine – Joy
December – Turquoise – Friendship
