Travelling with Jewellery

Protecting your jewellery should be a priority. Regardless of the value: costume, inexpensive, branded or expensive jewellery, below are the tips you need for travelling with these items.

1. Document the jewellery you are travelling with. A digital inventory can be made by laying out the jewellery on a white piece of paper (I recommend putting a ruler down for perspective of size) and taking a photo. If you need to file a police report or an insurance claim, this simple document will provide proof of ownership (and perspective of size) which will be very helpful when processing the claim.

2. Know when not to wear your jewellery. While your valuables are often safest on your person, there are activities during which you need to take your jewellery off:

i) While swimming or exercising. Salt water, sweating and chlorine can be damaging, especially for sterling silver jewellery.

ii) While applying sun screen or bug spray. Substances can get stuck in crevices making the piece hard to clean and/or form a film on your jewellery, making it appear dull and grimy.

iii) In direct sunlight. The following are crystals that will fade in direct sunlight: Ametrine, Aventurine, Apatite, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Beryl, Citrine, Calcite, Celestite, Chrysoprase, Kunzite, Sapphire, Fluorite, Rose Quartz, and Smokey Quartz.

iv) In cold water. The cold temperature causes your finger size to shrink temporarily. When this happens, rings can easily slip off your finger.

v) While using a hot tub or swimming pool. Chlorine can damage and discolor metals such as gold and platinum, and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones.

3. Store safely at your hotel. When not wearing your jewellery ensure it is locked in your room safe.

By using these tips, you are significantly less likely to lose your jewellery. In the event of a loss, it is important to contact your insurance company to initiate the claim process.
